At the end of book 2 in the original one, aang was killed by azula’s lightning so amon was born, however katara revived him with the Spirit water Oasis so aang is as good as new.That caused amon to lose his ability to bend elements but he still keeps his spirit comunication so he’s able to learn how to energy bend. This is why Korra isn’t able to comunicate with the Spirit world yet. That’s also why Amon is able to overcome Tarrlok’s bloodbending
